Hottest travel bargains

HOUSTON – If you're looking for a spring getaway, it's not too late.

Travel experts say Las Vegas is a bargain this year. A vacation package costs up to 40 percent less this year than it cost last year. Florida is on sale too: deals to Jacksonville, Orlando and West Palm Beach are all about 20 percent cheaper this spring than they were last year.

To get the best rates travel on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, and avoid peak times between March 16 and March 30.

It's not too early to plan for summer!

Online vacation-home giant Flipkey.com reports more than 40 percent of its properties already have reservations for either June, July or August. The company says travelers should book now.

"Particularly if you're going, if you're traveling in high demand areas during peak periods," said Eric Horndahl, vice president at Flipkey.com.

Those peak periods always include the first few weeks of summer when kids get out of school.

"I don't think it's too early to start thinking about summer travel. It's good to start getting a read on what prices are, airline prices in particular," said Jeanenne Tornatore, senior editor at Orbitz.com.

Travel experts say prices aren't likely to get any better than they are now. They also say many vacation destinations aren't just specific to one season.

"These ski resorts are fantastic in the winter, they're equally as fantastic in the summer," said Tornatore.

Also helpful to know, online travel site Kayak.com says summer travel is much cheaper in August than June or July.

Another tip: no matter when you travel, experts suggest you book at least 15 days in advance. Otherwise fares are generally 30 percent higher and last-minute bookings with less than three days notice will send those fares soaring by 60 percent.
