Homeowners unite to dispute city's new road proposal

HOUSTON – Many homeowners in northwest Harris County were upset after Harris County proposed to make changes to several roads in the area.

“They're doing to the community, instead of with the community,” said resident Michael O'Conner.

The county considered modifying West Richey Road, Weeds Road and Bourgeois Road. The proposal includes the construction of a new road connecting Hollister Road and Champion Forest Drive. The county said it's to relieve congestion.

The change would affect Greenwood Forest, Bourgeois Forest and Champions Crossing.

“These areas are growing and there's more traffic, but we're thinking there are already infrastructure in place that if we use it in a smarter way, that we can accomplish the same thing," said O'Conner.

The road would travel through this pond and walking trail.

“Not only from the standpoint of flooding, but it provides, as you can here, a good park area, almost a walk area, an exercise area for us,” said longtime resident Richard Wiegard.

The proposed plan is a disappointment to Wiegard.

“That's just a dead-end road on each end to those thoroughfares. I don't see that there's any need for that,” he said.

The community members organized a meeting Wednesday night. County engineers were expected to attend.
