THE WOODLANDS, Texas – A homeowner was stabbed Monday afternoon while he was trying to stop a burglary at his house in The Woodlands.
The incident was reported about noon at a home in the 100 block of Fairwind Trail Drive.
According to Montgomery County deputies, two men jumped a fence at the house. They said the homeowner, 65-year-old John Mood, saw the pair when his dog was barking at the suspects and pulled out a .38-caliber pistol.
When he confronted the two men outside, he noticed one suspect holding a crowbar, deputies said.
When the homeowner told them to leave, an argument broke out, deputies said.
"I said 'freeze', he kind of smiled at me, then I saw another one out the corner of my eye coming from behind the shed," said Mood.
The two intruders began to tussle with Mood, that's when one of the burglars cut the him across the stomach with a sharp object, deputies said. They said Mood fired at the burglar who cut him and the burglars fled through the backyard into a wooded area.
"I wasn't going to shoot, I was just going to hold them at gunpoint until police got there, but they came at me and it was either them or me," he said.
Mood told deputies he might have hit one of them in the back of the leg since he was limping.
He was treated for the cut on his stomach at St. Luke's in the Woodlands and released a few hours later.
Investigators searched the area looking for the men, but found no sign of the pair.
The intruders are described as Hispanic men between the ages of 17 and 21. Both men were wearing dark clothes with one wearing a hoodie. One of the men had a distinctive scar on the right side of his face from his eye to his cheek.
