HOUSTON -

Police are investigating a shooting that left a homeowner dead in his driveway in northwest Houston.

Officials said it happened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 8300 block of Hanfor Street.

According to HPD homicide detectives,  Dasalle Mason, 37 ,  came home to find his house ransacked and burglars still inside Monday night.

Police said the intruders got in the house through a back window.

"There was a struggle," Houston Police Dept. Homicide Investigator Michael Miller said.  "There was gunfire and consequently, the homeowner was shot and killed in his driveway."

Officials said a neighbor found  Mason dead on his driveway Tuesday morning. The home, officials said, was completely ransacked.

"We believe the motive to be robbery," Miller said. "The crooks that entered his home were certainly looking for something. They bypassed a lot of homes to get to ( Mason's) residence. So, certainly they had something in mind."

Miller said investigators aren't sure yet exactly what the crooks were looking for.

According to detectives, a high-tech surveillance system in his home was disabled just before the crime.

Authorities said no suspects have been identified. This investigation is ongoing.
