HISD: Loaded gun found in Cullen Middle School student's backpack

HOUSTON – A loaded handgun was found in a student's backpack at a local middle school, according to Houston ISD.

HISD says a tip was called in about the gun at Cullen Middle School on Houston's south side and the student was detained. The gun was confiscated and parents were notified, the district says.

The student was arrested and charged with possession of a prohibited weapon in a school zone.

HISD released a statement which read in part, "Please know that we take these situations very seriously. The safety of our students and staff at Cullen Middle School is always our absolute top priority."

The district also remained parents to speak with their students about the dangers of guns and that weapons should not be brought to school.

It's the second time in three weeks that an incident like this happened at the school. On March 27, a Cullen student was detained after the district says a loaded gun was found in a backpack.

Some parents tell Local 2 they are concerned whether enough is being done to keep weapons away from the campus.
