HOUSTON -

A driver died in a high-speed crash in southwest Houston early Monday morning.

Police said a woman lost control of an Infiniti just before 3 a.m. Monday on Memorial Drive. According to reports, she was headed inbound when the crash happened.

"We don't have any indications that alcohol was a factor," said Tim Trometer, with the Houston Police Department. "Right now we believe that speed was a factor, and [the driver] lost control of the vehicle."

Police said the driver, who was alone in the SUV, crashed with such force that the engine block shifted and crushed her.

"[The vehicle] struck the concrete shoulder of the underpass at Memorial Drive, rode the railing for a little bit, and then struck the guardrail," Trometer said.

The victim's name was not released.
