HOUSTON - What started off as a routine traffic stop turned into a brief, high-speed police chase that ended when the driver crashed in a ditch, deputies said.

It started around 11 p.m. Friday, when a Harris County deputy spotted an SUV going the wrong way on Gulf Bank Road.  When he attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped off to East Hardy, at times reaching 100 miles per hour.

According to deputies, the driver lost control of the SUV a little ways down the road, skidded into a ditch, and hit the culvert, flipping the SUV.  Deputies quickly took the driver and his passenger into custody.

Deputies said the SUV was not stolen, but both the driver and passenger were intoxicated.

The suspects' identities were not immediately released.
