High-speed chase suspect connected to police brutality case in Tennessee, police say

HOUSTON – One of the men at the center of Friday's bank robbery and wild high-speed police chase is connected to an alleged police brutality case in Tennessee, Channel 2 Investigates has learned.

Christopher Bishop, 34, who is charged with bank robbery, was also arrested in November 2016, in South Memphis, for outstanding warrants that included burglary.

The arrest, which was captured on cellphone video at a convenience store, appears to show a police officer punching a man, who was identified as Bishop.

Bishop was charged with assaulting an officer and resisting, following the incident, but spent only four days in jail before he was released.

It was unclear Monday where the brutality investigation stood.

At some point recently, Bishop traveled from Memphis to Houston, and it appears he did that with Travis Drain, 30, who is from Memphis.

The two men were stopped in a stolen Mercedes on Friday morning after a harrowing police chase that reached speeds of up to 120 mph, according to court documents.

Both men are accused of robbing the Amegy Bank at 5301 Bissonnet Street in Bellaire on Friday morning, shortly after they targeted a bank courier at an Eastside Wells Fargo.

At the Wells Fargo, the two men made off with two bank bags, filled with only paperwork, according to probable cause documents.

No one was seriously injured in either of the robberies or the chase.

Bishop and Drain have extensive criminal histories in the Memphis area.

The pair appeared together in front of  a federal magistrate in Houston on Monday afternoon.

Each man requested a court-appointed lawyer.

Bishop and Drain will remain in federal custody until at least Wednesday morning, when a bail and probable cause hearing is scheduled.
