HOUSTON -

While the holidays are a very joyous time, officials with the Houston Fire Department, the American Red Cross and the Houston Apartment Association are reminding families how dangerous things can turn.

On Thursday, they held held a holiday safety program, to remind people to be careful.

According to HFD, there were more than 150 home and apartment fires in December of last year in Houston alone.

"One of the best ways that you can make this season safe is by having a working smoke alarm. It needs to be functional, it needs to be checked once a month and batteries need to be changed twice a year," said Kenyatta Parker with the Houston Fire Department.

HFD officials also stressed the importance of having a kit filled with medications, treats and toys for children as you're leaving a fire scene.
