HOUSTON – A Houston fire truck was involved in a crash while on the way to an apartment fire in Southwest Houston.
It happened Wednesday evening as the truck was headed to the blaze on Bellefontaine. The SUV and fire engine collided and the SUV ended up hitting a tree.
Houston Fire Department officials said the fire started in the back of a first floor apartment and quickly spread. Two units were destroyed, leaving two families homeless.
With the winds blowing, firefighters dealt with flare-ups. Jeffrey Toronjo with the Houston Fire Department said the layout of the building also slowed down their efforts because firefighters had to pull out the sheet rock on the walls to get to the flames. Some of that sheet rock fell on a firefighter injuring him.
The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
The American Red Cross is assisting the two families displaced. No residents were injured, but one family's dog died in the fire.
No other details have been released on how the fire truck collision happened or if anyone was hurt during the accident.
The fire at the apartment was extinguished and investigators are now trying to determine the cause of the fire.
