14-year-old charged in hit-and-run crash in northeast Harris County

HOUSTON – A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday morning after hitting a pedestrian while driving Monday night in northeast Harris County, deputies said.

The crash was reported just after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Aldine Mail Route and Northwood Forest Drive.

Harris County deputies said the teenager was driving a Jeep Liberty west on Aldine Mail Route when he hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road outside a crosswalk.

The pedestrian was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The teen’s mother tells Channel 2 he took her car without her knowing. He was driving around with his friends and he was on his way to pick up his aunt, when the crash happened.

The teen does not have a driver’s permit.

Deputies said he fled after the crash, then later returned to the scene with his mother.  She told Channel 2 that her son got scared and came home, so he could bring his mother with him to the scene.  She said he was not trying to hide.

The teen was charged with failure to stop and render aid.  Investigators say he won’t face any more charges because he was not impaired at the time of the accident.
