HOUSTON - A robbery suspect accidentally shot himself while trying to make a getaway, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Kerney Devon Benson-Flowers, 20, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Investigators said Benson-Flowers and another man drove up behind two men who were sitting in a parked vehicle in a north Houston neighborhood on May 6, 2011.
The suspects jumped out of their Dodge Ram and robbed the victims at gunpoint, then fled, investigators said.
While the suspects were fleeing, the victims heard a gunshot and a man scream, detectives said.
One of the suspects had shot himself, investigators said.
The victims called for help after the suspects left.
Authorities collected blood samples at the crime scene. The DNA evidence was entered into a system to see if there was a possible match.
On Oct. 11, 2012, the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab identified Benson-Flowers as a match.
Benson-Flowers has not been arrested.
His bail has been set at $40,000.
