A man was killed after a confrontation with an off-duty deputy constable ended in a shooting, deputies said.

Investigators said the off-duty deputy was working a second security job at the Village In The Woods Apartments on Lakewood Forest near Grant Road.

Investigators said the deputy was called to the fitness center around 2:45 a.m. after receiving a report of someone trying to sleep there. After that, things took a violent turn.

“It looked like he was going to arrest the man there, for something. I couldn’t hear what was being said. And then the other man took him and pushed him away,” said David Hall, witness.

The deputy and the man got into a struggle, during which time, the deputy pulled out his gun and fired twice. Witnesses said the deputy tried to ask nearby residents for rags in an effort to stop the suspect’s bleeding before more help could arrive.

The suspect was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where he later died.

The deputy was also treated for minor injuries.

“Before police and paramedics arrived, you could tell he (the deputy) was visibly, he was hurting. But you know, he stood his ground and he did his job,” Hall said.

Investigators believe the man who was shot may have been homeless.

“From what witnesses say, the suspect resisted. And at some point, two shots were fired by our deputy,” said Mark Herman, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office.

The deputy involved in the shooting is a seven-year veteran of the department. He is expected to be released from the hospital later on Wednesday.
