HCSO: Man dies in deputy-involved shooting

Kemal Yazar, 43, lunged at deputies, investigators say

HOUSTON – A man died Sunday following a deputy-involved shooting in which a deputy was injured, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

It happened at Shiloh Mist Court near Fountain Arbor in northwest Harris County around 12 p.m.

Officials with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said a woman at the home called police and told them her husband, Kemal Yazar, was acting irrationally.

When EMS crews arrived, Yazar started attacking the medics, so they called for backup, officials said.

Investigators said deputy Brady Pullen and another deputy arrived a short time later and tried to restrain Yazar, but that's when things started to get out of hand. Officials said Yazar lunged at the deputies. Investigators said the deputies pulled their tasers, but they failed to stop him, so the deputies were forced to pull out their guns and open fire.

Investigators said both deputies shot at Yazar. Deputy Pullen was wounded and had to be rushed to the hospital, officials said.

"What we do know of his condition is that he has a concussion. He has cuts, bruises and a bite mark," said Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

Deputy Pullen has since been released from the hospital.

Pedro Munoz lives next door to where the shooting happened. He said he knew something was wrong when his neighbor ran over to his house and asked him to care for her three little girls.

"I said, 'What's going on?' She just ran out," said Munoz.

The deputies were put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure, officials said.
