HOUSTON – A man crashed into the back of a deputy constable's patrol car and fled the scene, resulting in a high-speed chase around the Beltway that ended with sparks flying from the vehicle, officials said.
Investigators said the chase started around 3 a.m. Tuesday after the suspect rear-ended a Harris County Precinct 5 deputy constable's patrol car and drove off on Beltway 8 and Westheimer Road. For about 40 minutes, the man led deputies on a 35-mile chase reaching speeds up to 100 mph, officials said.
Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables used spike strips to blow out the tires of the suspect's Chevrolet Tahoe. The driver kept going and drove on the rims, causing sparks to fly along the tollway. Investigators said at one point, the Tahoe was almost engulfed in flames.
The chase finally came to an end at Beltway 8 near Tidwell in northeast Harris County.
Various guns and knives were found inside the Tahoe, along with drug paraphernalia, investigators said.
The man was taken into custody. He faces several charges. His name was not released.
No injuries were reported.
