HOUSTON -

Harris County's Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority is changing its name.

There is a sweeping nationwide movement and a federal mandate to stop using the word retardation, which some consider to be a derogatory term.

In 2010, President Barack Obama signed what is now known as Rosa's Law, which removed the terms mental retardation and mentally retarded from federal health, education and labor policy.

It was replaced with intellectual disability.

According MHMRA's executive director, the new name change is expected to be completed sometime this year.
