HOUSTON -

This summer dozens of local children will be going for the gold in the Harris County Street Olympics.

The official opening ceremony kicked off Friday morning at Mickey Leland Memorial Park in northeast Houston. Several children, along with local community leaders, participated in the lighting of the Olympic flame.

More than 5,000 Houston-area children, ages 6 to 17, are expected to participate in the 2014 Harris County Street Games over eight weeks. Some of the sports they will play include kickball, hopscotch, hula hoop, jump rope and basketball dribble.

The Street Olympics' mission is to implement and sustain programs that provide training, support and resources that lead to healthy and productive lives for youth.
