HOUSTON – Some Harris County sheriff's deputies spent Sunday at the Harris County District Attorney's home after Kaufman County's district attorney was killed.
Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found dead in their house Saturday, two months after an assistant district attorney was gunned down in broad daylight outside the county courthouse. No one is in custody yet.
"I'm concerned because this is not the kind of thing … I've grown up in the law enforcement community. The last 30 years I've worked for either the D.A.'s office or on the bench. You just don't hear about this sort of thing happening," Harris County District Attorney Mike Anderson said.
As a precaution, Anderson and his family are getting extra protection. There will also be heightened security at the Harris County District Attorney's Office until further notice.
"I've seen more security than before," said Ivan Perez, who visited the Harris County Criminal Courthouse on Monday.
"It would be awful if something like that happened here," attorney Matthew Brown said.
Officials said there are not more officers at the courthouse, but the Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constables who are regularly there are making an effort to be more visible.
"It's a little tense," Harris County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Sara Marie Kinney said. "We're not going to change the way we're doing things. We're going to prosecute cases to the fullest extent of the law, no matter what happens."
In a statement, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said:
"Our prayers go out to the Kaufman County community as they deal with this terrible tragedy. We are monitoring the situation for any relevant details. As with any concern for public safety the Harris County Sheriff's Office is ready to act accordingly to protect the people we serve."
