Harris County DA Devon Anderson elected after opponent Kim Ogg concedes

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Kim Ogg, the Democratic candidate for Harris County district attorney, has conceded to the incumbent, Devon Anderson.

The race for the DA was not just one of the most tight, but one of the most fiery.

Devon Anderson is no stranger to the public eye. She told Local 2 she was surprised by the tone and rhetoric coming from her opponent Tuesday.

The race reached a crescendo when the recent death of a Harris County Sheriff's deputy became political fodder. Anderson's opponent Kim Ogg claimed Anderson gave the woman accused of killing the deputy a light prison sentence on a prior drug charge.

"I think there are plenty of issues to discuss in Harris County," Anderson said. "We have a lot of problems in Harris County crime-related. So I thought that's what the discussion would mainly be about. It just hasn't been that way. It's been disappointing, very nasty. It certainly wasn't that way when I ran as a judge."

With early voting numbers expected Tuesday night, Anderson says she's confident she will hold the office once helmed by her late husband Mike Anderson, who passed away from cancer.

Ogg said the criticism she has received has been unfortunate but that her words were misinterpreted. She says she never meant anything insensitive by her remarks.

Anderson's record as a judge and prosecutor earned her a key endorsement from the Houston Police Officer's Union.

Ogg had a busy day, casting her own ballot and campaigning across Houston. She wants last-minute voters to know she's going to fight to keep this county safe. She says it's what she's been doing her entire professional career.

"I want voters to understand this is the most important race on the ballot," Ogg said. "It's the most important race to them and their families. I want to help. I've tried all my life in Houston. I'm a native daughter of the city."
