Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office say an 18-year-old and his 16-year-old girlfriend were sitting in their car when a man started walking toward them.

Officials say the boy got nervous, so he put the car in reverse.

"The young man backed his car up to leave and then the suspect opened fire several times on their vehicle," said Sgt. Hilborn with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicle was shot seven times.

With a blown out tire, the couple was able to drive around to the other side of the complex and call 911.

Officials say the girl was shot in the leg. Her boyfriend was not injured.

By the time authorities arrived at the scene, the gunman was gone.

Officials say the girl was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

"It's really scary," resident Erin Palculict said, "especially when you're a woman and you're by yourself. You don't really have a defense mechanism, especially when someone has a gun."

Investigators said it's unclear why the teenagers were targeted.

If you have any information about the gunman you're asked to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office at 713-221-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
