Group names top-performing schools in Houston region

HOUSTON – A nonprofit group on Monday released results of a study aimed at identifying the top-performing schools in the Houston region.

Children at Risk said the study researched 1,383 public schools in the eight-county greater Houston region and ranked those schools based on achievement, performance, growth and college readiness.

Buckalew Elementary School in the Conroe Independent School District was named the top elementary school in the region.

The award for top middle school in the region went to Fort Settlement Middle School in the Fort Bend Independent School District.

Debakey High School for Health Professions in the Houston Independent School District was named the top high school in the region.

The group also ranked schools in a “Gold Ribbon” category, meaning that 75 percent of students at the school are low-income but high-performing.

In that category, Park Place Elementary School in HISD was named the top elementary school, while Crenshaw Elementary and Middle School in Galveston Independent School District was named the top middle school.
