Grass fire burns in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – A large grass fire burned in southeast Houston on Thursday.

The fire broke out along Hall Road near Kingspoint, near Dobie High School, at about 1:15 p.m.

Houston firefighters said the flames quickly spread, causing about 20 acres to burn.

A shelter-in-place was issued for the Clear Brook Meadows subdivision for a short time, but it has been lifted.

HFD offered these tips to shelter-in-place:

  • close all windows and exterior doors
  • turn off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems
  • close the fireplace damper
  • bring your pets inside or into a protected area

Residents in the subdivision said seeing the fire close to their homes was frightening.

"It's scary because the wind is kind of going this way," resident Max Manlangit said.

Firefighters said the blaze was not a threat to the homes or school because there were natural fire breaks between the two.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A red flag warning is in effect in southeast Texas until 5 p.m. The warning indicated that fires could spread rapidly.
