HOUSTON – The Champagne Cowgirls purchased the Grand Champion Junior Market Steer, Amos Moses, with a $375,000 bid on Saturday at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The steer was exhibited by 14-year-old Aspen Martin. Ellie Francisco said they made the buy in honor of one of the group’s founding members, Donna Bruni, who recently passed away.

“There were two things that played a determining factor going into the auction,” Francisco said. “We like to support girls who show steers, and we like to support Texas education.”

Francisco said the group knew they wanted to do something for Bruni, and when they saw a girl exhibiting the Grand Champion steer, they were willing to go the extra mile.

Robert Clay, Heather and Sean Congdon, Mary Alice and E.D. Lester, and Olympia Drywall Company bought the Reserve Grand Champion steer, Trump, exhibited by Robert Hurst, 17, of Friona, Texas, for $335,000. Narciso Flores, with Olympia Drywall Company, expressed his interest in supporting youth and nurturing their interest in agriculture.

“I grew up in FFA and learned through it,” Flores said. “We certainly want to support the youth of America. It’s always fun to come to Houston.”
