Good Samaritan jumps into action during fatal SW freeway accident

HOUSTON – It did not take long for the manager of Rooms Furniture to respond to a fiery accident in front of his store on the Southwest Freeway near Chimney Rock Monday.

A man yelled for help from the overpass.

"We just heard a really loud noise and went outside to see what was going on and we saw this truck and this car. There was smoke coming out of it," said Mazi Keyghodadi, the manager of Rooms Furniture. "Basically saying help, help, so I came back, grabbed a mattress, another person next door grabbed it with me and we got it closer to the car so the guy could jump."

Soon they heard an explosion and did not see the man again.

"It happened all of a sudden. We were just minding our own business and this happened. It was surprising for us," said Keyghodadi.

Dan Olen Winfrey, 61, died in the accident.

Police said his SUV collided with a US Postal Service trailer and the SUV rolled.

The accident closed the outbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway for about six hours Monday.
