Girls hide in closet during home invasion in SE Houston

HOUSTON – When 14-year-old Selena Rivas heard loud knocking on her side door Thursday afternoon she knew something was not right because she didn't recognize the man.

Rivas grabbed her 8 and 16-year-old sisters, and all three of them went to a back bedroom and locked themselves in a closet of the home on La Paseo and Monsanta in southeast Houston near Hobby Airport.

"He finally broke down the door," Rivas said.

The man started grabbing electronics and jewelry and tried to get in the room where the sisters were but gave up.

Meanwhile, Rivas quietly called her mom and told her what was going on. The teen's mother told her to call police. While police were on the way, the young girls' parents rushed home and actually arrived before police and caught the home invader in the act.

"My mom came in, she brought him down, my stepdad...there was blood all over, my sisters were scared," Rivas explained.

The parents were able to attack the suspect and hold him down until police arrived. Officers arrested the suspect and took him to jail.

Rivas is very shaken up about the home invasion and still not sure why her home was targeted but is just thankful no one was hurt.

"I guess I just think quickly. I just get them [sisters] quickly to the room. I didn't want anything to happen to them. I would rather get hurt than them get hurt," said Rivas.

Police say they won't release the name of the suspect until he is officially charged.
