Officials said an 8-year-old girl died Sunday night after being hit by a jet ski in Crosby.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the 8-year-old girl and her 11-year-old friend were riding on a jet ski driven by a family friend in the San Jacinto River near the Lake Houston spillway. The girl’s father was following on a jet ski behind them.
Officials said about 50 feet from shore, the noise from the engine apparently spooked a bird that was sitting a buoy. The bird flew toward the jet ski and the driver swerved. The two girls fell off.
The second jet ski then hit the 8-year-old. The father told authorities that the wave prevented him from seeing his daughter or the other girl in the water.
Officials said the 8-year-old was airlifted by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. She died about an hour later.
