A middle school student from north Harris County was transported to Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute in critical condition after being hit by a car.

It happened just south of FM 1960 shortly after 6:00 Monday evening. Paramedics worked hard on the ground to treat 12-year-old Kishante Jones, but Life Flight was eventually called in to transport her to the medical center.

Traffic investigators say the girl, who is in the 7th grade at Bammel Middle School on Ella Road was crossing the street when she was hit. There is no crosswalk in the area, the speed limit is 40 miles an hour and there are no street lights on the part of the road where the accident happened.

The car showed the signs of the impact of the collision, with school papers, a purse and a child's jacket left along the road. Deputies ran tests on the driver and questioned him for several hours -- but they say right now there's no evidence he was speeding or distracted in any way.

"He did turn around," said Sergeant Kevin Sims from the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "He came back, observed a female lying on the floor, got out his vehicle, took his coat off, and covered the girl and called 911, and waited for investigators to arrive."
