Girl, 15, home alone during break-in

HOUSTON – Bellaire police are searching for the suspects they say broke into a family's home during the middle of the day and stole several expensive electronic items.

The break-in happened on Thursday afternoon in the 5200 block of Holly Street. At the time, a 15-year-old girl was home alone.

She heard someone ring the doorbell but didn't answer the front door.

A short time later, she heard someone breaking the glass door on the side of the home. The terrified teenager ran to a closet to hide and call her parents.

Meanwhile, the suspects spent several minutes inside the home and left with some of the family's personal possessions. The girl was not injured.

Bellaire police say this incident is a reminder that parents should talk to their children about what to do when they're home alone and someone comes to the front door.

"It's a good idea not to answer it," said Byron Holloway, Bellaire's Police Chief. "However, they should say through the door, 'We're not answering the door right now. If you need help, I can call police and they will be here in a few minutes.'"

Holloway says this could prevent your home from become the target of a break in. He believes crooks are looking for people who aren't home during the day so they can easily break-in.

If you have any information about the suspects in this case, call Bellaire police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
