Get up close with elephants at the Houston Zoo this weekend

HOUSTON – There's a special event planned at the Houston Zoo this weekend. It's an Elephant Open House, where you can get a closer look at the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat.

The zoo's elephants: Methai, Tess, Tucker, Shanti, Baylor, Thai and Tupelo, will welcome visitors into the state-of-the-art elephant barn on Saturday for exploration.

Each elephant "bedroom" in the barn will highlight a different aspect of elephant care.

Visitors can also meet the keepers who care for the elephants every day.

Tickets are $65 per person (non-members) and $55 per person for Zoo members. Children under two get free admission to the open house.

There will also be a Pachyderm Picasso raffle. The winner gets a masterpiece painted by one of the elephants. Tickets are $5 each.

You can also have your picture taken with one of the elements for $25. Photos will be printed on-site.

All proceeds benefit elephant conservation.

The Elephant Open House is set for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
