A Houston-area elementary school teacher and music instructor has been charged with having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Harris County jail records show 42-year-old Kenyan Rodgers was being held Tuesday on charges of indecency with a child and aggravated sexual assault of a child. Bond was set at $200,000 for Rodgers, who was booked July 16.
The Fort Bend Independent School District said Rodgers, who taught at Ridgegate Elementary School, has been put on administrative leave. The district released this statement on Monday:
“On July 16, Texas Southern University (TSU) police arrested Kenyan Rodgers who has been a teacher at Ridgegate Elementary since February 2, 2004. Rodgers was charged with one count of Indecency With a Child by Contact and one count of Aggravated Sexual Assault and has been in the Harris County Jail since his arrest. These charges are a result of a TSU Police investigation which began on July 15 involving a 13-year-old female victim. Rodgers is on administrative leave. Fort Bend ISD Police are conducting a separate investigation. The safety of our students is our highest priority, and anyone with information about any inappropriate conduct is asked to contact the Fort Bend ISD Police at (281) 634-5500 or the Crime Stoppers Hotline at (281) 491-TIPS (491-8477).”
TSU officials said Rodgers provided transportation to the University for a group of Fort Bend ISD band campers. He brought the alleged victim along in his personal vehicle.
Rodgers is not affiliated with TSU.
TSU released this statement about their investigation:
“Texas Southern University’s Police Department is currently investigating an alleged sexual assault that took place on its campus. The alleged incident did not involve any Texas Southern University employee or student. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Reportedly, the incident involved two persons visiting the university for band camp; an adult and a minor.”
Court documents indicate the alleged sexual encounter happened in a parking garage.
