A Florida pastor ran into complaints after posting the message "Christmas - Easier to spell than Hanukkah" on his church's outdoor sign over this past weekend.
Dr. Mike Butzberger, pastor at Lighthouse Baptist Church in North Palm Beach, Fla., told the Palm Beach Post that he put up sign, intending it as a humorous message.
"It was not in any way shape or form meant to be offensive or disparaging or mean spirited," he told the newspaper. "And it's sad to me there are people that are so humorless that they would be offended."
It didn't take long for Butzberger to get some feedback on the sign. Soon after it went up, he began fielding calls from people questioning his intent and others who were offended by the message.
While Rabbi Shlomo Ezagui of Chabad House Lubavitch of Palm Beach told the Palm Beach Post he hadn't seen the original message, he said he didn't know what the intention behind it was after being shown a photo of the sign.
"It's clearly an insensitive message," Ezagui said. "I hope it wasn't anything negative though."
On Sunday night, Butzberger changed the message on the sign to "Jesus Loves You." The Palm Beach Post reported that he chose the new message because of its low character count and it's easy to change.
