First-grader wins $30K for school

HOUSTON – Just a few minutes of cooking with your kids every day could lead to a lifetime of skills -- or $15,000 cash.

“We’re here to tell you that Georgia is a winner!” said Matthew Hurst with Mars Food.

She's only in first grade, but Georgia Holloman's culinary skills have already won her family $15,000 and her school even more.

“I am happy to present you and the Bay Area Christian School with this check for $30,000 for a cafeteria makeover,” said Hurst at that same assembly and with a giant check in hand.

“I just, I can’t believe it," Georgia's mom, Kelly Holloman said.

Holloman said she thought the Ben's Beginners contest sponsored by Uncle Ben's was a perfect fit for her daughter.

"Anytime we’re in the kitchen, she’s in there wanting to stir stuff and make stuff and try stuff and mostly eat the cake mix,” Holloman said.

But Georgia’s dad, Wes Holloman, acted as the contestant's co-star.

"Part of the contest was to make a recipe,” he said. “We made open-face tacos and we put that together, worked together and then we took a picture.”

As for Georgia, being one of only five grand prize winners out of about 2,000 entries came as no surprise.

“I just knew, (be)cause I felt like I was going to win," Georgia said.
