HOUSTON -

Fire crews said they found a body and a gun inside the charred remains of a home in east Houston.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Wednesday at a home on Evanston Street near Boise.

Investigators said when the smoke cleared, fire crews found a man's body along with a gun inside the home.

Firefighters said they freed a small dog that had been chained to burglar bars.

Neighbors said they have seen suspicious activity in the area.

"The neighborhood over here is very bad -- gangs, drugs -- it's very bad," neighbor Angel Gonzalez said.

Detectives are working to determine if the man had been shot and if he died before or after the fire. The cause of the fire is also under investigation.
