Amile Porter lives at the complex. He said he went door-to-door, warning residents of the danger.

"One lady was asleep with her baby," said Porter. "I made sure everybody was out and called the fire department."

Fire officials said the flames wasted no time ripping through the complex.

"When we got here, we had fire all the way up through the roof," said Jerry Terrell with the Houston Fire Department. "We got here within a few minutes after we got the call, but it already had heavy smoke and fire when we got here."

So far, there is no word on any injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
