Fire forces high school basketball game evacuation

HOUSTON – A fire at a north Harris County high school forced an evacuation during a basketball game.

The fire broke out at Nimitz High School in the 2000 block of W. Thorne Drive near Hardy Road around 8 p.m. Friday.

Investigators said a pickup truck caught fire in the automotive room. The room is adjacent to the high school.

Fire officials said the fire was started by an auto mechanic instructor who was working on his own truck in the building.

Aldine fire crews responded to the fire and put out the flames, but officials said smoke spread into the school.

No injuries were reported.
