Fierce fire rips through apartment building

Fire damages building at Arbor Ridge Apartments

HOUSTON – A massive fire tore through a north Harris County apartment building on Thursday.

The fire broke out at the Arbor Ridge Apartments in the 22900 block of Imperial Valley Drive near F.M. 1960 about 3 p.m.

Flames ravaged the roof and the building was gutted after the three-hour fire. Residents said there were 16 units in the building.

A new mother and her 2-week-old son took refuge in a KPRC Local 2 live truck after the fire. The mother said she was taking a nap when the fire broke out.

"The fire department and everyone came in saying, 'Just grab what you need and get out," said the mother. "There was flames on the roof. The smoke was spreading."

The woman said she escaped with her son, milk, a bottle and her purse.

"I lost everything," she said.

The Red Cross went to the complex to help the displaced residents.

The Ponderosa, Spring, Aldine, Little York and Cy-Creek fire departments worked together to battle the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the blaze was caused by workers using welding equipment on pipes.
