Fence fire fills air with smoke

HOUSTON – Thick, black smoke filled the sky in southwest Houston on Thursday.

Houston firefighters said a fire broke out behind a home on Las Palmas between Weslayan and Newcastle, about 2 p.m.

Investigators said 24 feet of fence, some plastic PVC pipe being used to renovate the old River Oaks Medical Center, a few trees, a patch of ground and a power pole burned.

"When the fence caught on fire, the PVC caught on fire and that's what was emitting the large column of black smoke," HFD spokesman Jay Evans said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
