FEMA funds to be reallocated for border security

HOUSTON – Hurricane Ike used more than $5 billion in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief funds.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 used nearly 10 times that figure.

Large-scale natural disasters are an unfortunate hallmark of the Gulf Coast that cost the federal government incredible amounts of money.

Within the last few days, the Department of Homeland Security has siphoned $268 million from FEMA's disaster relief fund to cake care of issues at the Texas border.

DHS has also taken $31 million from the U.S. Coast Guard, designed for ship maintenance, and $35 million from the TSA screening equipment maintenance.

It's all apparently legal because those programs fall under the massive umbrella of the department of Homeland Security.

Even with several hundred million dollars disappearing from FEMA, there's still about $7 billion in the disaster relief fund.
