HOUSTON – Federal investigators have raided a University of Houston academic building, the university acknowledged Friday.
"Federal authorities have begun an investigation on the University of Houston campus, details of which have not been made public. The university is cooperating fully, as it does in all law enforcement investigations. Based on the information provided to us, the University of Houston is not the target of the investigation. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," Richard Bonnin, executive director of media relations said in a statement on Friday.
University officials will not comment about the nature of the investigation, but Local 2 Investigates has learned through two sources that the investigation is focused on a professor who may have improperly used government grant money.
The FBI in Houston told Local 2 Investigates their agency was not involved in the raid, which one source said netted at least one computer but no arrests.
Several labs within "Science & Research Building I" house sensitive research material and are locked.
NASA and the Department of Defense are affiliated with some of the work that happens within the seven-story building.
One source said the federal investigators were armed and said, "'We'll be back.'"
