HOUSTON - Monday marks the busiest shipping day of the year.
With two weeks left until Christmas, employees at FedEx are working overtime to make sure their customers get all of the gifts underneath the tree.
"It doesn't matter how long it takes," manager Francis Singleton said. "We will work overtime to get items shipped out. Our highest volume areas are Katy and Sugar Land. On average, each driver will head to about 120 homes a day, but in the coming weeks they can have up to 300 stops a day," said Singleton.
Team members are gearing up to process 19 million packages Monday across the country. According to FedEx, that is 200 packages per second.
"It gets real hectic, but I love my job and I love this time of year," said Ken Young, who has been a FedEx driver for 21 years. "They call me Santa Claus! They love to see my truck coming down the street."
Employees will work up until Christmas Eve and will even be on call Christmas Day. An increase in online shopping has directly impacted the shipping industry. According to FedEx, there has been a 10 percent increase since last year.
If you decide to self-wrap your gift and ship it, here is some advice from the experts:
- Make sure your box is a shipping box, not a storage box.
- If your item is fragile, use 4 inches of bubble wrap and make sure the "bubble" side is touching the item.
- If you are wrapping a hollow item, such as a vase or coffee mug, stuff the inside with paper or bubble wrap
- When you're done wrapping, shake the box and make sure nothing jiggles on the inside
If you avoid going to the mall until the last minute, according to FedEx you have until Dec. 22 to ship items through FedEx Express, which will arrive anywhere in the U.S. by Dec. 24.
