Suspected drunk driver arrested after man killed in wreck on I-10 East

HOUSTON – A man suspected of driving drunk was arrested after he was involved in a multi-vehicle wreck Saturday that killed a man on I-10 East westbound at Gellhorn.

Mark A. Avalos is charged with intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

According to police, the accident involving four vehicles happened Saturday around 5:25 a.m. and had all lanes closed for hours.

Investigators said both men were traveling westbound on the freeway.

Police said Avalos, the driver of an Expedition, was speeding and struck the Explorer, causing the driver of the Explorer to roll over. The man was ejected from the Explorer and died. The identity of the 30-year-old man has not been released.

Witnesses told police that Avalos, 24, pulled over, walked over to the deceased victim, got back into his vehicle and took off.

An officer spotted Avalos in the Expedition, which had severe damage to a short distance from the scene. They determined he was intoxicated and took him into custody.
