NBC News – Police say a family dog killed a 3-day-old baby girl in California early Monday.
The girl's mother thought the 3-year-old male Shar-Pei and pit bull mix was chained in the backyard.
She said she set the newborn on the couch and left the room for only a few moments.
The mother was in the bathroom and heard screaming.
Newborn Susie Kirby was rushed to the hospital where she died from her injuries.
The dog responsible for the attack and another dog were taken from the home to be put down.
"We are currently investigating this as an accident. We don't believe there is any criminal activity at this point," Sergeant Daniel Macias of the Fresno Police Department says.
