Family and friends of a man who was shot by an off-duty Houston Police Officer gathered Sunday

The shooting is being investigated

Family and friends of a man who was shot by an off-duty Houston Police Officer gathered Sunday for a prayer vigil outside his home in the Alief section of southwest Houston.

"We all love each other and stick together," said Princess Coleman, who's son, Casey Brown, remained in ICU at Ben Taub Hospital.

According to Houston police, Officer J. Loosmore shot Brown, 21, during an altercation Thursday outside Brown's home, at the 11600 block of Riderwood in southwest Houston.

Houston police said Loosmore, who was off-duty at the time, shot Brown after Brown physically attacked him.

Brown's family, joined by Community Activist Quannel X, accuse Loosmore of initiating the attack.

"I'm here to stand up and testify to every mother, every child, every father, everyone that's in our community that this is a no go. We will not stand for this," Coleman said.

The shooting is being investigated by Houston Police Department's Homicide Division, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

Houston Police said the shooting occurred during Officer Loosmore's second time at Brown's house. He lives in the neighborhood and was walking with his wife and three dogs, according to police. Police told KPRC2 Brown's German Shepherd attacked one of Loosmore's dogs. After breaking up the dog fight, Loosmore went home, but later returned to Brown's house.

He returned, according to police, with his Houston police officer's badge and a gun.

"[Casey Brown] was on his own property. He didn't break any laws," Quannel X said.

There are conflicting accounts as to what led to the shooting. Police said Loosmore shot Brown after Brown attacked him. However, another witness told Brown's family Officer Loosmore was first to physically attack Brown.

"To go and bam on that brother's door after you went home and got your badge.  After you went home and got your gun. You came back because you wanted a confrontation," Quannel X continued.

Quannel X and Brown's family are calling for a grand jury investigation into what they said was a criminal offense.
An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
