Families prepare early for hurricane season

HOUSTON – The City of Houston is helping families get ready for hurricane season with the first ever "May Day Houston" event.

The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season begins June 1, but the Houston Community Preparedness Collaborative (HCPC), along with the City of Houston are sponsoring a variety of events focused on helping Houstonians prepare.

May Day Houston brings together community organizations, businesses, emergency responders, and residents to help promote emergency preparedness.

Wednesday, the City of Houston held an event at the Department of Health & Human Services Neighborhood Ready Training Aldine WIC on Aldine Mail Route in north Houston.  Families were advised on how to prepare for possible disasters.  This included putting together an emergency kit, writing out an emergency plan, or finding out ways to stay informed when disaster strikes.

Houston residents can make a "Pledge to Prepare", by promising to do at least one thing aimed at helping ensure they are prepared.  Visit maydayhouston.org for ideas on what families, schools, and organizations can do.
