Eyes on Houston: San Luis Salute gala benefits UTMB Galveston Zika researchers

GALVESTON, Texas – Space pirates took over the shores of Galveston Friday night for the 21st Annual San Luis Salute.

The event began at 7:30 p.m. at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort.

Thousands of Landry’s employees, friends and supporters attended the University of Texas Medical Branch event.

The CEO of Landry’s Inc., Tillman Fertitta, hosted the event after he arrived in style by helicopter. He said his mission is for people to enjoy themselves and have fun for the night.

“It’s just fun. And you know, we make this about the people. If you notice this isn’t for corporations,” Fertitta said. “This is for people who want to come. And like I said it’s for UTMB Galveston for such a great cost.”

The San Luis Salute paid tribute to UTMB’s Zika researchers.

“People don’t realize UTMB Galveston has some of the best researchers in the world. There’s nobody better than these guys,” Fertitta said.

The event featured dinner, dancing and Las Vegas-style entertainment with show stopping performances throughout the night. The night was filled with performances by acrobats, while artist and singer Jason Derulo wrapped up the night.
