A former Liberty High School teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after investigators say she had a sexual relationship with a student.
Valerie Celeste Moore, 30, of Houston, pleaded guilty to indecency with a child by exposure. The plea was for a lesser charge than the initial charge of sexual assault of a child.
Moore was arrested in April 2013. During her trial prosecutors presented evidence that showed she sent more than 5,000 text messages to a 15-year-old male student with whom she had a sexual relationship.
She also was accused of renting a hotel room for the two to share during one of their encounters. Moore had been a teacher at Liberty High School less than 45 days when the relationship began.
Moore will be eligible for parole in two and a half years. After she serves her prison sentence, she will be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years. She will also have to pay a $2,500 fine.
