HOUSTON - A former Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy, who's accused of sexually assaulting a woman, appeared before a judge for the first time.

On Thursday, Donald Wayne Tipps was read the charges against him.

Tipps was indicted Monday with sexual assault and official oppression charges.

On Aug. 13, prosecutors say Tipps answered a call when he encountered the female victim and in the course of his investigation determined she had an open warrant.

Tipps allegedly coerced the woman to perform oral sex on him in lieu of being arrested on her open warrant.

"If there;'s anybody out there that has any additional information about Deputy Tipps, or that may have been a victim of Deputy Tipps, we would encourage them to come forward and either call our office or Crime Stoppers," said Asst. Harris County District Attorney Lauren Byrne.

A 21-year veteran of the sheriff's office, Tipps could now face about that much prison time if he's convicted.

Tipps was hired by the Harris County Sheriff's Office in 1991. He resigned Aug. 14, the day after the incident was reported.

If you were a victim or know someone who was, please contact the HCDAO Civil Rights Division at 713-755-7077 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
