Employee goes to lunch early, misses car crashing into building

HOUSTON – A driver was arrested after crashing a car into a building in north Houston on Friday, authorities said.

The driver smashed into the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union building at 3030 North Freeway, according to officials. The incident left a 10-foot hole in the side of the building.

Barry Thomas, who works at the building said, "He was coming down the access road, lost control and came up on the curb through the grass and into our office."

Authorities said no one was hurt and that part of the building was empty at the time.

Mark Rhodes, who works in the building, said taking an early lunch break saved his life. He usually goes to lunch around 2:30 p.m., but a meeting with an international representative forced him to go to lunch an hour earlier.

"My desk is totally trashed," Rhoads said. "I would have been seriously injured if we hadn't gone to lunch at that time."

Within an hour of the crash, a union group that represents theater stage hands in the area came together to patch up the 15-foot hole.

"Very grateful no one was injured. The building can be fixed, people can't be fixed," Thomas said.
