An Houston ISD elementary school teacher has been charged with indecency with a child, said a letter sent home to parents.
According to the letter, Miguel Yepez, a second grade teacher at Harvard Elementary School, was arrested last week. The charges are related to an incident that took place three years ago.
The school said they immediately contacted authorities and re-assigned Yepez to duties away from the classroom until the investigation is over.
Yepez is out on bond. Local 2 stopped by his north Houston home but no one answered the door.
"I'm in shock," said Maria Hernandez, who lives next-door to Yepez and has know him for nine years.
Hernandez said she considered having Yepez tutor her fourth grader, who was having problems in school. Now, she's glad she didn't.
"I never went that far as to get tutored yet but just thinking about it, what happened if I did let it?" Hernandez said.
Hernandez also said Yepez has two children of his own and she often sees them outside together.
"He's a great father, a great father," said Hernandez.
HISD released this statement Tuesday:
"Harvard Elementary School Teacher Miguel Yepez was arrested last week and charged with indecency with a child. The charges are related to an incident that took place three years ago, but was only recently reported.
We immediately contacted the appropriate authorities and reassigned the second grade teacher to off campus, non-classroom duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
After learning of his arrest, we notified parents and began working to find a permanent replacement for his classroom. Because this is an ongoing criminal case, we are prevented from providing further information.
However, we want to stress that we take these situations very seriously. Our goal during this time has been and will continue to be ensuring our students are safe and that teaching and learning continue, uninterrupted."
