GUN BARREL CITY, Texas (AP) -

Gun Barrel City is staying true to its name by passing a resolution encouraging homeowners to own a firearm.

The city council in the east Texas city on Tuesday approved a measure urging residents to have a weapon in their home, "together with ammunition."

There are exemptions included in the resolution, such as for those with a mental disability or who "conscientiously oppose" having a weapon.

The city, which is 55 miles southeast of Dallas, is steeped in firearms: Its logo features two revolvers and the motto is, "We'll shoot straight with you."

Mayor Paul Eaton told Dallas television station WFAA-TV that gun ownership is a right.  "We don't need our rights taken away," he said.
